Although not as popular as the Blue Hole, the Canyon is nevertheless a spectacular dive spot. As there are lots of divers here in the main season, we often go there for our „Early Morning Dive“ because one thing is for sure: Having the canyon all to ourselves is especially wonderful!
Through the shallow lagoon with its maximum depth of 3 meters it is possible to dive to the edge of the reef, even when there are high waves. This makes the Canyon a perfect dive spot even if it is windy. Through a little opening in the reef the dive now really begins! Depending on the weather conditions there can be strong currents at this point, which is why we recommend you to not inflate your BC too much in order to avoid floating to the surface.
Our dive continues to the left at around 11 to 22 meters depth until we reach the beginning of the canyon - a big rock standing on slightly sloping, sandy ground. From afar you will already see the bubbles coming out of the ground, originating from divers that are already inside the canyon. Enjoy this spectacular sight and dive along the crevice until you enter the gorge yourself!
Through the big entrance you will now slowly descent to the ground of the canyon. Take a moment to pause on this sandy spot, let your eye wander all the way up, following your bubbles slowly making their way up to the surface. Also, don't forget to take the opportunity to look down into the depth of the canyon, which goes down even further: to 54 meters! Unfortunately, skin divers cannot take this direction, which is reserved for TEC divers only. A little later we will already start ascending, but take our time to „say Hi“ to the many glass fishes at the top of the canyon. The ascent via the so called Fish Bowl (as can be seen on the divers map) is unfortunately not possible anymore, which is why we have to return on the same route we came from.
Depending on the remaining pressure in our tanks, we will then either continue ascending along the reef or dive a bit further on the right hands side where a little group of sand eels, flat heads and moraines await us. There are lots of solitary coral blocks waiting for you to be discovered before we do our safety stop and dive back through the opening in the reef top and the lagoon..
